LEED certifies buildings. But what certifies the fabric inside them? This guide explains OEKO-TEX, GOTS, WRAP, BSCI, and other key compliance certifications that complete a factory’s compliance profile.
A LEED Platinum factory is a green building. But is the fabric it produces sustainable? Are the workers inside treated fairly? Does the management system meet international standards? For buyers who need complete assurance, LEED is the foundation — not the ceiling.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100
Tests and certifies every component of a textile product against a list of up to 100 harmful substances. A garment certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 has been tested for:
- Pesticide residues
- Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium)
- Formaldehyde
- Allergenic dyes
- pH value
Key stat: over 20,000 certified companies in more than 100 countries. Particularly important for baby clothing, intimate apparel, and skin-contact garments.
GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard
GOTS is the world's leading organic textile standard. It covers the entire supply chain from raw fiber to finished product. Requirements include:
- Minimum 70% certified organic natural fibers
- Prohibition of toxic inputs in processing
- Social criteria based on International Labour Organization (ILO) standards
GOTS certification is the gold standard for sustainable fashion brands. Urmi Group's UHM Ltd and Eco-Couture are among Bangladesh's GOTS-certified facilities.
WRAP – Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production
Focuses on social compliance: worker rights, workplace safety, and ethical business practices. 12 principles covering:
- No forced or child labor
- Safe working conditions
- Freedom of association
- Legal compliance
Key distinction from LEED: WRAP audits processes and management systems. LEED certifies physical infrastructure. Both are necessary.
BSCI – Business Social Compliance Initiative
A supply chain management system used by European retailers. Factories undergo social audits assessed against the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The Complete Compliance Profile
The most trusted factories in Bangladesh hold multiple certifications: LEED (building), GOTS or OEKO-TEX (material), and WRAP or BSCI (social). When evaluating suppliers, require documentation for all three dimensions.
